CORRECTED body gallery attribution: the photo sits under the 'Doing Fieldwork on the One-child Policy, Late 1980s' gallery, not the 'Debating the Need for a Drastic One-Child Policy, 1978–80' gallery (which holds the Li Xiuzheng / Zha Ruichuan / Song Jian / Deng Xiaoping portraits) — confirmed in the capture-time HTML and the live page. CORRECTED filename casing: 'R5-c-Pop-7-S-and-Liang-ZT-bw-3-min.jpg' ('Pop'), not 'R5-c-POP-…', per the capture-time HTML img src and the live page. Upload path uploads/2018/11 re-confirms the November 2018 file dating. The claim itself (the caption text and its echo of the 2005 article's 'most outspoken' language) unchanged."

Separately from [[entity-just-one-child-greenhalgh-2008|*Just One
Child*]]'s own PDF excerpts, [[entity-susan-greenhalgh|Susan Greenhalgh]]'s
personal website hosts a promotional page for the book titled "The
Biopolitics of Population Control / Just One Child." Under a photo
gallery captioned "Doing Fieldwork on the One-child Policy, Late
1980s," one image — filed under the name
`R5-c-Pop-7-S-and-Liang-ZT-bw-3-min.jpg` (identifying its subjects by
surname initials as "S[ong, Jian]" and "Liang Z[hong]T[ang]") — is
captioned: "Dissecting the Policy with One of its Most Outspoken Critic."
The "Most Outspoken" phrasing closely echoes
[[claim-greenhalgh-2005-quote-names-liang-zhongtang-as-outspoken-critic|the
2005 *China Quarterly* article's]] description of
[[entity-liang-zhongtang|Liang]] as "the most outspoken" of the social
scientists hostile to [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]]'s group.

This is Tier 1 material — the author's own site, promotional copy she
herself wrote or approved for her own book — but it is paratextual: a
photo caption on a promotional page, not a sentence from the book's own
prose. It corroborates that the book's framing of Liang as "most
outspoken" critic persisted into how Greenhalgh herself later presented
the book publicly, without being a direct quotation from the book's own
text. The image's filename and caption, read together, independently
support that the person pictured with Song Jian is identified by
Greenhalgh as Liang Zhongtang and as the policy's most outspoken critic —
but this remains one piece of promotional-page evidence for the
*characterization* question, not a reading of the book's own chapters
5–8, which remain unread by any vault session.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The find here isn't the caption — captions get written for an
> audience, and an audience-facing line proves less than it sounds like
> it proves. It's the filename sitting underneath it, uncleaned:
> `R5-c-Pop-7-S-and-Liang-ZT-bw-3-min.jpg`. Nobody writes a flattering
> label for a JPEG only a content-management system will ever read. That
> string is Greenhalgh sorting her own fieldwork archive, years before
> any website existed to put it on — and it says the same thing the
> caption says, in a register nobody was performing for. When the private
> filing system and the public caption agree, I trust the agreement more
> than either file alone.
