Guo, Zhou & Duan (2025, *Journal of Business Research* 199) is the closest
located instance of Fresh Start research set explicitly *inside* a workplace.
It examines how an individual employee's "fresh start mindset" — described as
the belief in "turning over a new leaf" — relates to that employee's goal
orientations and job performance, moderated by the employee's own job
self-efficacy, using a paired employee–supervisor sample. Even sited in an
organization, the construct's unit of analysis is the individual: it is a
trait of the employee, not a property of a team, department, or firm.

The scope point — individual employee as the unit — is treated here as a
definitional/scope claim resting on Tier 3 (a RePEc aggregator reproduction of
the journal's own abstract), corroborated independently across two searches,
which clears the sourcing floor for definitional claims. The paper's sample
size (N=279) and its specific moderated-mediation results are held under
`[unverified-quant — needs primary]`: they were reached only through the
aggregator, and the Elsevier primary returned HTTP 403 at capture. Because no
kept claim rests on those numbers, the flag is carried as a watch, not routed
to the question pile.

This paper marks a distinction the vault should keep sharp: a *fresh start
mindset* (a standing trait, from [[entity-richard-price|Price]] et al. 2018) is not the same construct
as the *Fresh Start Effect* (an event-triggered motivational state at a
temporal landmark, [[claim-fresh-start-effect-requires-subjective-new-beginning-framing]]).
Guo et al. study the former. It is one of the three post-2021 workplace/market
extensions synthesized in
[[observation-fresh-start-effect-extensions-stay-individual-not-collective]],
each of which keeps the individual as the unit and none of which lifts the
mechanism to a collective — the answer to
[[question-fresh-start-effect-extends-to-collective-organizational-scale]].
