The **Hinman Collator** is an optical machine that superimposes two copies of the
same edition and makes their differences visible: mirrors and alternating lights
"blink" one copy against the other, so a changed letter appears to jump or flicker
while unchanged text stays still. Charlton Hinman built a prototype in the late 1940s
(sources vary on the exact year) and
used the technique to compare some 55 copies of Shakespeare's First Folio (1623),
reconstructing the book's printing order and its
[[claim-stop-press-correction-produces-within-edition-variance|stop-press corrections]]
in *The Printing and Proof-Reading of the First Folio of Shakespeare* (1963).

The instrument is a cross-domain, cross-time borrowing. Per Wikipedia, Hinman's
device "built on earlier work such as Carl Pulfrich's blink comparator used to help
identify the former planet Pluto, and Hinman's work analysing aerial photographs
during World War II." The **blink comparator** was an astronomical instrument
(Carl Pulfrich, Zeiss, 1904) that flashed between two photographic plates of the
sky so a moving object stood out against fixed stars; Clyde Tombaugh used one to
find Pluto in 1930. But the second half of Wikipedia's sentence is itself
part-legend *(corrected 2026-07-12)*: Hinman's wartime work was Navy
**cryptanalysis**, not photo interpretation. Per Steven Escar Smith's history of
mechanical collation ("'The Eternal Verities Verified'", *Studies in Bibliography*
53, 2000; quoted by the Kenneth Spencer Research Library blog), Hinman said he
*heard* while in the military about comparing successive aerial photographs of a
target — he did not claim to have done that work himself — and Smith observes that
"using World War II technology, it simply would not have been possible to
photograph the same patch of ground twice from exactly the same altitude and
position." Hinman himself seems to have acknowledged the story wasn't entirely
true. The cross-domain borrowing is real, but it traveled into the rare-book room
as an idea Hinman heard, not a technique he practiced.

This makes the collator the concrete embodiment of the abstract bridge in

a physical instrument for detecting

**Why this note is `seedling` and flagged.** The cross-domain origin is the
interesting, load-bearing claim, and it is *surprising* — one would expect a
Shakespeare tool to have Shakespeare origins. Under sources.md's escalation rule a
surprising historical claim must clear Tier 1–2, but the capture rests only on
Wikipedia (Tier 4) and a Folger blog. The origin story and the specific figures are

the blink-comparator facts, the 55-copy figure, and the 1963 book are confirmed,

who heard the aerial-photo technique described, not a photo-analyst who practiced
it (Smith 2000, via the Kenneth Spencer Research Library blog). Smith's article
itself is paywalled and still unread, so the question note stays open for the
primary read; the note stays `seedling`.

2026-07-12 audit could reach only through the KU blog's paraphrase is now confirmed
against Smith's own text, and the second-hand chain is retired:

- **War work.** "He was trained as a Navy cryptanalyst and assigned to a
  codebreaking unit in Washington, D.C., though he would spend most of the war on
  special assignment in Australia." Fredson Bowers was his commanding officer, with
  William H. Bond, Giles Dawson and Ray O. Hummell in the same unit — a detail the
  blog omits, and a striking concentration of future bibliographers in one
  intelligence group.
- **The aerial story is hearsay, in Smith's own framing.** "In the course of his
  service Hinman *heard* a story about the analysis of aerial photographs that
  guided his thoughts on mechanical collation" — and Smith concludes it "was
  something that Hinman 'heard,' perhaps from a neighboring unit or a colleague
  elsewhere in the intelligence community, and not something that he observed
  directly."
- **Smith's own verdict on the legend**, which the vault had not previously
  recorded: "the aerial reconnaissance story has been repeated so often that it has
  eclipsed a more important technological antecedent, and one that actually
  worked" — i.e. the blink comparator, "invented in 1904 by the German
  instrument-maker Carl Pulfrich." Smith's thesis is precisely that this note's
  first-named ancestor is the real one and the second is largely legend.
- **The soft prototype date is now hard.** First experimental collations at the
  Folger in the summer of 1946; the prototype demonstrated to the Bibliographical
  Society of America in 1947 (the PBSA editor pointedly put "machine" in quotation
  marks); patent granted 1949, "though by that time he had abandoned this design and
  completely reconfigured his idea into the machine we know today." The
  "late 1940s vs 1950s" ambiguity recorded in 2026-07-12 resolves as a conflation of
  the abandoned prototype with its successor.

**Who actually credits the blink comparator matters, and it is not Hinman.** The
question note asked specifically whether Hinman himself named the comparator as a
source. He did not, in those terms. The attribution comes from **Arthur M. Johnson**,
who took over commercial manufacture of the collator and "wrote that Hinman
developed the basic design of his machine after studying something called the
'astronomer's microscope'"; Smith identifies that device as Pulfrich's blink
comparator. William H. Bond adds that "Hinman knew of this machine and may have even
investigated adapting it for books." Smith is careful about the limit of the
evidence — "It is not known if Hinman ever saw the comparator at Virginia, but we do
know that he spent time studying, if not an actual device, then at least the
principles behind its operation" — and Hinman's own account claims only
"conventional principles" put to use "in what patent lawyers call 'a new mechanical
environment.'" Smith's ranking of the two ancestors is explicit: "The military's
unsuccessful wartime experiments may have encouraged Hinman, but **the blink
comparator was the real technological model for his machine.**" This note's title
names both ancestors; on Smith's account they are not equal, and the aerial one is
mostly the story people repeat.

Smith also supplies a longer pre-history the vault does not yet hold: Willoughby
told Hinman about his own superimposition experiments at the Folger in 1941; Neidig
used photographs to superimpose titlepages of the Pavier quartos; Bogeng described
using a stereoscope to find typographical variants in 1931; and F. Drouin proposed
the stereoscope for detecting forged banknotes in 1894, suggesting book applications
without imagining variant-hunting. Pulfrich's blink comparator was itself an
adaptation of his own earlier stereo-comparator, and the stereoscopic principle
returns in the Hinman's successors — the Lindstrand (1970s), the McLeod (1980s), and
Carter Hailey's later device.

One methodological detail worth keeping for its own sake. Smith raises a second
wartime candidate — "Jeffreys sheets," a codebreaking technique structurally
suggestive of mechanical collation — and then dismantles it in the same breath: "It
is tempting to link this technique to Hinman. So tempting, in fact, that I feel
compelled to raise it here largely for the purpose of ruling it out." He confirms
with Bond that their unit worked on Japanese code "with tools no more sophisticated
than pencil and paper." That is the discipline [[moc-argument-from-silence]] is
about, executed by a working historian on his own most attractive hypothesis.

One bibliographic oddity worth flagging rather than smoothing: the article cites a
telephone conversation with William H. Bond dated 30 March 2001, in a volume dated
2000 — so the volume's nominal date precedes at least some of its content. Cite as
vol. 53 (2000) per the journal, but treat the date as the volume's, not the
article's completion.
