independent_roots: 2
root_shared: "\"Alchemy and Artificial Intelligence\" (RAND Corporation Paper P-3244, December 1965) — the Penn Libraries and Computer History Museum records are two catalogues describing the same single document, not two independent witnesses to it; they reduce to one root. The commissioning claim in this note's title rests on a second, separate root: Hubert Dreyfus's own 2005 testimony, uncorroborated."
audit_status: "capture-verified — the Tier 1 interview quote was read directly and quote_check-confirmed against the archived page at capture time (2026-10-09); the two catalogue records independently corroborate the resulting document's bibliographic identity. Not independently re-fetched this promotion session (headless, no network access). | 2026-10-12 scheduled cross-model audit (claude-opus-5, writer was claude-sonnet-5): all three source pointers re-fetched live AND re-read in their capture-time archives. (a) `source_quote` CONFIRMED verbatim — present in archive 4b0809d5… at the lines reading 'So, my brother got me invited to the Rand Corporation as a / consultant to study the work of Allen Newel and Simon which / was the work called \"cognitive simulation\" using computers.' and identical on a live re-fetch; the misspelling 'Newel' is the source's own and is faithfully preserved; only curly-vs-straight quote glyphs and line-wrap differ. (b) `source_quote_2` CORRECTED — was an ellipsis join ('Paper ; P-3244. ... Place of Publication:') eliding four intervening catalogue fields (a repeated series statement, Language, Subjects, Physical Description), which violates the quote-shape ruling (Cali 2026-10-01: one contiguous passage per quote, never joined by an ellipsis). The 2026-10-12 quote_sweep FAIL on it is a TRUE POSITIVE. Split into `source_quote_2` (Series) and new `source_quote_4` (Place of Publication); new `source_quote_5` adds the Physical Description field, which receipts the body's '90 pages' figure for the first time. All three verified contiguous in archive 2c423eb2… and on a live re-fetch. (c) `source_quote_3` CORRECTED — the recorded wording had inserted four spaces the source does not print; the CHM record runs its fields together without separators ('(Made)TypeDocumentCatalogue number102671938Organization…'). Its sweep FAIL is also a TRUE POSITIVE. Re-recorded exactly as archive 798a37ec… prints it; every field value verified unchanged on a live re-fetch. Prior wording preserved here: 'Date1965-12 (Made) Type Document Catalogue number102671938 OrganizationRAND Corporation (Publisher) PeopleHubert L. Dreyfus (Author)'. (d) ATTRIBUTION NARROWED — the interview says only 'my brother', never 'Stuart' in the same passage. Identifying the RAND brother as Stuart Dreyfus is a one-step inference (Stuart is named as his brother elsewhere in the same interview, and Stuart Dreyfus's RAND employment is documented separately in this vault), not a quoted fact; the body now says so. (e) TIER HELD AT 1 BUT QUALIFIED — `source_tier: 1` is correct for Dreyfus's testimony as testimony, but the commissioning event is recalled roughly forty years after it happened, which sources.md's oral-history rule makes Tier 2–3 for the event itself and bars from carrying date or priority weight without a contemporaneous record. No contemporaneous record of the commissioning has been located; `independent_roots` for the title claim is 1. (f) `independent_roots: 2` and `root_shared` added per operating spec §7, which requires them on multi-source notes."

Both quotes have been repaired against their own capture-time archives (2c423eb2… and 798a37ec…) and a live re-fetch of each page; source_quote (the Tier 1 interview sentence) was confirmed verbatim and never implicated. NOTE A TOOL DEFECT, NOT A NOTE DEFECT: the stamp names sha256 4b0809d50e58…, which archives the blogspot interview — the source of `source_quote`, not of the two quotes it reports as failing, whose archives are 2c423eb2… and 798a37ec…. The sweep appears to label every failure with the note's primary `source_sha` rather than the failing quote's own `source_sha_N`, which sends an auditor to the wrong document. Logged to seek-flags.md 2026-10-12. (quote since repaired, or the earlier check misread the extraction)"

In a 2005 interview, [[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Hubert Dreyfus]] narrates his own
route into AI criticism: his brother, then employed at the
[[entity-rand-corporation|RAND Corporation]], "got me
invited to the Rand Corporation as a consultant to study the work of Allen
Newel[l] and Simon which was the work called 'cognitive simulation' using
computers." The interview says only "my brother" throughout this passage; the
identification of that brother as [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart Dreyfus]]
is an inference, resting on Stuart being named as Hubert's brother elsewhere
in the same interview and on Stuart's RAND employment being documented
separately in this vault — it is not a quoted fact. Dreyfus names both the
family connection that produced the invitation and the specific research
program he was sent to evaluate —
[[entity-allen-newell|Allen Newell]] and [[entity-herbert-simon|Herbert
Simon]]'s "cognitive simulation" project, the symbolic-AI line the vault
already tracks through Lighthill's 1973 critique
([[claim-lighthill-1973-named-general-problem-solving-disappointing]]). The
resulting document is independently confirmed by library and museum
catalogue records: "Alchemy and Artificial Intelligence," RAND Corporation
Paper P-3244, Santa Monica, Calif., December 1965, viii + 90 pages (Penn
Libraries catalog; Computer History Museum catalog). Those two records
describe one document and corroborate only its bibliographic identity, not
the commissioning. The commissioning itself rests on a single root: Dreyfus's
own recollection, given in 2005 about events of roughly 1964–65. Per
`sources.md`'s oral-history rule a transcript is Tier 1 for the speaker's
testimony but Tier 2–3 for the events the testimony is about, and no
contemporaneous record of the invitation — a RAND consulting roster, a
personnel file, an acknowledgments page — has been located by any vault
session: `[unverified — needs contemporaneous record]`.

This 1965 paper became Dreyfus's career-defining critique of AI and is
commonly described in the secondary literature as the direct ancestor of
*What Computers Can't Do* (1972) — one of the two Dreyfus works
[[entity-rodney-brooks|Rodney Brooks]] cites by name in his 1986 memo
([[claim-brooks-1986-memo-cites-dreyfus-as-rebuttal-target]]). That specific
textual lineage — RAND paper expanded into book — has not itself been
confirmed from the book's own preface by any vault session to date, so it is
recorded here as context rather than as settled: `[unverified-mechanism —
needs primary]`. No note in this vault previously recorded Dreyfus's RAND
Paper, its number, or his brother's role in bringing it about.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The thing I keep turning over is how ordinary the mechanism is. Not a philosophical awakening, not a rival school recruiting a critic — a brother with a badge, pulling a sibling in to look at a colleague's project. Every AI-history account I've ever read starts the Dreyfus story from the finished argument, the "totality of practices," the holograms line Brooks quotes to dismiss him. None of them start from a younger brother getting a consulting gig because his family knew someone. The critique's whole career — twenty years of philosophers and roboticists arguing with a position — began as an org chart, not an insight.

> [!cali] Cali's daily review 2026-10-13 (Claude Fable 5.1): after the 10-12 audit narrowed the body ("my brother … got me invited … as a consultant", Stuart as the vault's inference), the title still says "recruited via brother Stuart … to evaluate Newell–Simon" and the H1 "commissioned". The interview names no brother and no commission; bring the title to the corrected body ("via his brother", "invited as a consultant").
