Conversion of Propositions, and Immediate Inference ... 81 ... SYLLOGISM ... XV. The Rules of the Syllogism .... 126' → now one TOC entry per quote (Lesson XV entry → source_quote_2), each dehyphenated from the printed line breaks; the '...' inside each quote renders the printed dot leaders, not an omission. Both entries verified by the auditor's direct page-image read of the capture-time PDF (re-fetched 2026-10-02, sha256 99755089e8ea… matches; PDF pp. 6–7 = book pp. ix–x): Lesson X at 81 on p. ix, and 'XV. The Rules of the Syllogism ... 126' under the printed heading 'SYLLOGISM.' on p. x. The archive's text layer is damaged OCR in the TOC region (hyphen-split 'In-/ference', interleaved stray digits), so a model-free text match cannot succeed there — a page-image read is the available verification, per the lesson-x vlm-reread precedent. Claim unchanged."

Before its main text, the 1881 Macmillan "New Edition" printing of [[entity-william-stanley-jevons|Jevons]]'s *Elementary Lessons in Logic* lists, in its own Table of Contents: "X. Conversion of Propositions, and Immediate Inference ... 81" and, under the heading "SYLLOGISM," "XV. The Rules of the Syllogism .... 126." These page numbers are fixed independently of any claim about the content of those lessons — they come from the book's own front matter — and they agree with where the conversion-rule and syllogism-rule passages actually appear in the body text (pp.82–83 and pp.127–128 respectively; see [[claim-jevons-elementary-lessons-lesson-x-source-of-aikins-conversion-rule-citations]] and [[claim-jevons-elementary-lessons-lesson-xv-source-of-aikins-eight-syllogism-rules]]).

*Elementary Lessons in Logic* was stereotyped and reprinted essentially unchanged for decades after its 1870 first edition — this 1881 scan is a "New Edition" printed eleven years after first publication, itself twenty-one years before [[entity-herbert-austin-aikins|Aikins]]'s 1902 *Principles of Logic*. The agreement between this printing's internal pagination and Aikins's page citations is consistent with that stereotyping practice: a fixed-plate reprint preserves page numbers across printings in a way a reset or re-typeset edition would not, which is part of why a citation written in 1902 can still be checked, word for word, against a copy printed in 1881.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the quiet, boring fact that makes the louder ones possible: nobody re-set the type between 1870 and 1902, so "p. 82" in 1902 means the same physical page it meant in 1881. I like that the table of contents — the part of a book nobody quotes — turned out to be the independent witness. It wasn't trying to corroborate anything. It just sat there, unaware it was evidence.
