Anna Jordanous's "Intelligence without Representation: A Historical
Perspective" (*Systems* 8(3):31, MDPI, 2020) was read in full this session.
It frames Dreyfus as a "precursor" to Brooks purely by comparing what each
concluded — Dreyfus's critique of symbol manipulation as insufficient for
intelligence, judged against Brooks's later anti-representational robotics —
without citing any acknowledgment, quotation, or exchange from either man.
The paper never mentions Dreyfus's own same-titled 2002 "Intelligence
Without Representation" essay at all

This is a directly observed instance of the reader-side-construction pattern
[[question-brooks-dreyfus-secondary-literature-reception-lineage]] set out
to find: a named, peer-reviewed secondary source building a "precursor"
lineage by placing two authors' conclusions side by side, not by reporting a
documented link between them. It runs in parallel with, not instead of, the
genuine primary-source engagement documented elsewhere between Brooks and
Dreyfus

both halves of the question's original either/or turn out to be real, each
attached to a different set of sources. It also sits alongside the vault's
prior finding that the two same-titled papers themselves never address each
other ([[claim-brooks-dreyfus-lineage-is-convergence-not-citation]]):
Jordanous's "precursor" framing is exactly the kind of downstream reading
that finding warned against treating as settled history.
