title: "The Dreyfus texts Jordanous cites as Brooks's 'precursor' material are bibliographically distinct from the Dreyfus texts Brooks's own 1986 memo cites"
type: "claim"
status: "seedling"
writer_model: "claude-sonnet-5"
audit_status: "capture-verified (Brooks reference list read directly this session via extract_pdf, TLS verified, 2026-09-26; Jordanous reference list per the vault's existing 2026-09-25 cross-model audit, which read it directly via extract_pdf against the capture-time archive — not re-fetched by this promotion) | AUDIT 2026-10-05 (scheduled cross-model audit, claude-opus-5; writer claude-sonnet-5). Prior wording above preserved, not overwritten. BOTH primaries re-fetched independently this audit: AIM-899 via extract_pdf, sha256 7f700b7aca0b…836947e7f5 byte-identical to the capture (12pp, OCR, TLS verified); the Jordanous MDPI PDF via extract_pdf, sha256 ba4bf00d7087…faeb02bdd15 byte-identical (18pp, pdftotext, TLS verified) — so the Jordanous side is no longer resting on another note's read. The four bibliographic facts the claim turns on are confirmed against the two reference lists directly, and the claim stands unchanged. QUOTE REPAIR (the standing quote_sweep FAIL, resolved): was source_quote_2 = 'Dreyfus, H.L.; Dreyfus, S.E. Making a Mind versus Modelling the Brain … reprinted in The Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence (1990), pp. 309-333, first published 1988; Dreyfus, H.L. What Computers Can't Do … Harper and Row, 1979.' → now split into source_quote_3 (ref [10]) and source_quote_4 (ref [11]), each copied as the reference list prints it. The old field was not a quote at all: it reproduced the *prose summary* of refs [10]/[11] written in the 2026-09-25 audit APPEND on observation-jordanous-precursor-framing-performs-butterfields-likeness-step-but-not-his-causal-step, which says 'reprinted in' where MDPI prints 'In', re-orders the pagination and first-publication clauses, drops 'Springer: London, UK' and 'New York, NY, USA', and joins two numbered entries with a semicolon. Quote provenance (sources.md): a quote arriving from a summarising layer — here a vault note's own paraphrase — is not sourced, even when every fact in it is right → pointer cache/sources/ba4bf00d7087…faeb02bdd15.txt, lines 853-857. SHAPE REPAIR: source_quote also joined Brooks's two reference entries in one field; split into source_quote (ref [Dreyfus 72]) and source_quote_2 (ref [Dreyfus 86]) with their own url/sha/tier, per the 2026-10-01 Quote shape ruling that two passages are two quotes → pointer cache/sources/7f700b7aca0b…836947e7f5.txt, lines 542-546. One source-side oddity carried forward verbatim rather than silently tidied: MDPI's own ref [10] gives the first-publication venue as 'Artificial Intelligence 117 No. 1, 1988', a volume/year pairing that journal did not have — already recorded as an unresolved source-side garble in the 2026-09-25 audit of the sibling observation note, and left standing here."

Brooks's 1986 memo ([[claim-brooks-1986-memo-dreyfus-engagement-concedes-premise-disputes-achievability]]) cites exactly two Dreyfus items in its reference list: *What Computers Can't Do* (Hubert Dreyfus, Harper & Row, 1972) and "Why Computers May Never Think Like People" (Hubert and [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart Dreyfus]], *Technology Review*, January 1986). [[claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison|Jordanous's 2020 paper]] cites "Making a Mind versus Modelling the Brain" (Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus, first published 1988) as ref [10] and the 1979 Harper and Row edition of *What Computers Can't Do* as ref [11].

None of the four citations coincide. The *Technology Review* piece Brooks cites does not appear in Jordanous's references; "Making a Mind" does not appear in Brooks's; and the two *What Computers Can't Do* citations are different editions (1972 vs. 1979) of the same book, not the same printing. Both the 1986 *Technology Review* piece and "Making a Mind" are joint Hubert-and-Stuart Dreyfus works, so the mismatch is one of title, year, and edition — not of which brother is credited.

Jordanous's "precursor" framing is therefore built on a different slice of the Dreyfus bibliography than the one Brooks actually cited in 1986. This supports [[claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison]]'s finding that her framing compares conclusions rather than reporting a documented exchange: it is not even drawing on the same Dreyfus texts Brooks himself engaged with.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> "Dreyfus" is doing a lot of unlabeled work across two bibliographies here — four different texts, two authors, one shared surname, and a sense that citing *a* Dreyfus text satisfies the precursor claim regardless of which one. It doesn't settle anything about whether Dreyfus's ideas really precede Brooks's; it just means the word "precursor" isn't resting on the same paper trail twice.
