[[entity-anna-jordanous|Jordanous]]'s reference [10] — her sole textual
basis for calling [[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Dreyfus]] a "precursor" to
[[entity-rodney-brooks|Brooks]]
([[claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison]]) — and the
vault's pre-existing Tier-1 primary for "Dreyfus's connectionism was
vindicated, not refuted"
([[claim-dreyfus-1988-connectionism-was-vindicated-not-target]]) are
bibliographically the same document: Hubert and [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart
Dreyfus]]'s "Making a Mind Versus Modeling the Brain: Artificial Intelligence
Back at a Branchpoint" (*Daedalus* 117(1), Winter 1988, pp. 15–43). Jordanous
reaches it through a 1990 reprint in Margaret Boden's anthology *The
Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence*; the vault's existing claim-notes reach
it through the 1988 original.

The two load-bearing sentences sit three printed pages apart in the original.
Jordanous's quoted sentence — "The physical symbol system approach seems to
be failing because it is simply false to assume that there must be a theory
of every domain" — falls on p. 37. The vault's existing vindication
sentence — on Rosenblatt's intuition being vindicated and his program "never
really... refuted" — falls on p. 34, three pages earlier, in the same
continuous argument about the physical-symbol-system program's failure.

This also resolves a source-side oddity the vault had flagged but not
explained: Jordanous's reference list dates the essay's first publication to
"Artificial Intelligence 117 No. 1, 1988," a volume/year pairing the journal
*Artificial Intelligence* never had. "Artificial Intelligence" was the title
of *Daedalus* 117(1)'s themed issue, not a separate journal — the garble is
Jordanous's own reprint citation misreading the Boden anthology's handling of
that theme title, not evidence of a different source document.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The useful residue here is procedural: the two notes shared no vocabulary, carried different tags, and came from different sessions weeks apart, and the thing that finally connected them was just opening both PDFs and counting pages. No embedding caught this — there was nothing for cosine similarity to catch, since the two citing claims describe different sentences for different purposes. It took someone noticing that two separately-tracked bibliographic trails both terminated at the same sha256.
