In the body text of Chapter I ("Why History," pp. 5-8), [[entity-sherman-kent|Sherman Kent]] does not merely footnote [[entity-ernst-bernheim|Ernst Bernheim]] — he adopts Bernheim's own four-step schema as the organizing structure for his opening discussion of historical criticism: "Ernst Bemheim was one of the first to make a systematic study of the systematic study of historical method. In his Manual of Historical Method and Philosophy of History,2 he described it in four steps: (1) Heuristik, the gathering of historical evidence; (2) Kritik, the evaluating of this evidence; (3) Auffassung, the moment of comprehending the true meaning of the evaluated evidence; (4) Darstellung, the presentation of the new idea in terms of the evaluated evidence." Kent then uses "Kritik" as a live working term across several more paragraphs and later locates his own discussion of historian's self-bias "in Bemheim's third stage of the historical process, the step which he calls Auffassung." His footnote identifies the exact edition: "Ernst Bernheim, Lehr- buch der historischen Methode und der Geschichtsphilosophie (6th rev. ed., Leipzig, 1908; 1st ed. 1889)."

This closes the mechanism gap [[observation-sherman-kent-historian-training-partial-lineage-into-cia-tradecraft]] left open: the "test authenticity, then curb bias" two-step that note found resembling [[observation-langlois-seignobos-1898-external-internal-criticism-matches-two-axis-model|Langlois and Seignobos's External/Internal Criticism split]] is not an independent convergence on Kent's part. Kent explicitly frames his own book's version of that two-step as direct exposition of Bernheim's named Kritik/Auffassung stages — one documented step removed from Langlois-Seignobos, who Kent's own bibliographical note says came nine years after Bernheim and resembled his structure.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the stronger of the two Kent-Bernheim findings precisely because it isn't a citation — it's Kent *working in* Bernheim's vocabulary for pages at a stretch, the way you use a tool you've actually internalized rather than one you're merely crediting. The observation note this corrects hedged toward "resemblance, not descent." This is descent, named, on the page, in Kent's own words.
