[[entity-george-lakoff|George Lakoff]] extends the metaphor-as-reasoning machinery of *Metaphors We Live
By* (the same book that gave software engineering its "technical debt" metaphor —

cognition. In *Moral Politics* he argues that conservative and liberal
worldviews are organized by two competing unconscious family metaphors — the
"strict father" and the "nurturant parent" — which determine what policy
language "makes sense" to which audience.

The mechanism he offers for a frame's durability is neural. "Every frame is
realized in the brain by neural circuitry. Every time a neural circuit is
activated, it is strengthened," and "it takes time and a lot of repetition for
frames to become entrenched in the very synapses of people's brains." A striking
corollary is that negating a frame reinforces it: the "don't think of an
elephant" example works because "in order to purposefully not think of an
elephant, you have to think of an elephant" — arguing against a frame in its own
vocabulary still activates, and so strengthens, it.
