Emerson W. Pugh's 1984 history of core memory — *Memories That Shaped an Industry* (MIT Press) and its companion *IEEE Transactions on Magnetics* article — could not be read directly against this claim: IEEE Xplore's copy returned non-PDF content, and the Internet Archive's scan is under controlled digital lending, blocking full-text access. The best available account of Pugh's content is J. A. N. Lee's IEEE Computer Society "Computer Pioneers" biography of [[entity-an-wang|An Wang]], which states: "It is remarkable that while Pugh (1984) in his description of these times gives full credit to Wang, writers about Forrester's Whirlwind, which used magnetic core storage (Redmond and Smith 1980), and the MIT Institute Archives Staff (1990), manage to ignore Wang and his controlling patent completely, giving full credit for the core memory to Forrester."

On this secondhand account, Pugh's history is not a source that accuses [[entity-jay-forrester|Jay Forrester]] of self-mythologizing — if anything it is described as the one work in this cluster that credits Wang fully. The erasure problem Lee describes is located instead in Kent Redmond and Thomas M. Smith's 1980 *Project Whirlwind* and the MIT Institute Archives Staff's 1990 newsletter — institutional accounts of Forrester's project, not statements by Forrester himself. This narrows [[claim-forrester-self-credited-as-sole-core-memory-inventor-downplaying-core-culture]]'s "hero inventor" charge: even the source named as most likely to corroborate it, on this reading, does the opposite.
