Song-1978-self-report/Olsder observation]] found that, read directly, the
two notes' "predates" arguments run on different axes and should not be
read as reinforcing each other. The causal-credit note's twenty-month gap
is an argument about **event chronology**: the policy (June 1978) preceded
Song's public projections (February 1980), so the projections cannot have
caused the policy. The self-report note's five- and twenty-one-year gaps
are an argument about **publication chronology** in an entirely separate
dating dispute — whether Song's own account of his first exposure to
population cybernetics dates to 1975 (Olsder) or 1978 (Song's own
retrospective) — bearing on when two competing witnesses' accounts reached
print, not on when the policy itself originated. Confirmed by a full read
of both notes' source documents this session: Liang's essay contains no
reference to Olsder, Kwakernaak, or Twente; the 2024 U-Today interview
contains no reference to the June 1978 leading-group meeting, Chen Muhua,
or Document No. 69. Greenhalgh's 2003 article, by contrast, does name the
June 1978 first meeting of the Birth Planning Leading Group (p. 185,
citing Li 1980) and cites Chen Muhua (1981), though it nowhere mentions
Document No. 69 — that passage is the corroborating citation identified
below, not a cross-reference to Liang.

The 0.87 cosine score is tracking a real shared subject — Song Jian, 1978,
contested priority over the policy — not a false friend in the sense of
being topically unrelated. But the specific numeric claims each note
carries are independent facts sharing a rhetorical shape ("X predates Y,
undercutting a claim resting on Y"), not one argument recorded twice. The
genuine connection between the two notes' underlying documents runs
instead through
