Two independent lines of evidence complicate a reading of

primary artifact: a Hacker News "Ask HN" post dated 2022-12-21 — three months
before Graham-Cumming's March 2023 domain registration

already uses the same "clean source is older than the contamination event"
structure for AI training data: "On July 16, 1945, the nuclear detonation at
Trinity site ended the era of low background steel... has the same thing
happened to the internet?" The poster is pseudonymous and the post drew one
point and zero comments, so this is an existence proof of prior public use,
not evidence the post fed into Graham-Cumming's own naming choice.

Second, a named secondary account: Rajiv Pant (former CTO of The New York
Times and The Wall Street Journal) writes that "while John Graham-Cumming has
helped popularize this analogy... the comparison appears to have emerged
organically across the tech community," citing artist/programmer Kyle
McDonald's December 5, 2022 X post making the same observation independently,
and noting "others independently reached similar conclusions around the same
time." Pant also reports that Graham-Cumming's own earlier tweets on the
subject are "no longer available" — meaning even the claim that
Graham-Cumming used the analogy before March 2023 is secondhand. McDonald's
own post was not independently read; the specific date and wording rest on
