rested entirely on Sergei Novikov's memoir for the fact of Grigory Margulis's
exclusion from the 1978 International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki.
That uncontested spine now has independent confirmation. A 2020 MacTutor
History of Mathematics article by Dr Sidnie Feit — drawing on Olli Lehto's
official IMU history *Mathematics Without Borders* (1998) and on Dan
Mostow's preserved personal correspondence — states plainly that "the
Soviets did not allow Margulis to travel from Russia to the nearby Helsinki
Congress to receive his Fields medal," and reproduces, from the published
ICM Proceedings, [[entity-jacques-tits|Jacques Tits]]'s own closing remarks
at the ceremony: "I cannot but express my deep disappointment — no doubt
shared by many people here — in the absence of Margulis from this
ceremony." Tits delivered the address on Margulis's mathematical work in his
absence; his words are a primary, published statement independent of
Novikov's account.

A second, earlier independent source likely exists: Gina Kolata's
contemporaneous *Science* article "Anti-Semitism Alleged in Soviet
Mathematics" (202, no. 4373, pp. 1167–1170, 1978) is the citation Wikipedia's
article on Margulis gives for the same two facts. That article was not
itself fetched this session — its existence and relevance are known only at
one remove, via Wikipedia's citation of it — so it is recorded here as a
corroborating lead, not weighed as a third independently-read chain.

The travel block itself is not in serious doubt; what remains genuinely
contested is the *mechanism* — whose vote, on which committee — which is
the subject of
