One body correction — was 'anonymously authored the committee's published report — the 1712 Commercium Epistolicum — in his own handwriting' → now matches Merton: 'anonymously wrote the preface for the committee's second published report, the draft of which is in his own handwriting', with the Commercium Epistolicum / 1712 identification explicitly marked as the vault's addition — Merton's text says preface-of-second-report, not whole-report authorship, and never names the Commercium Epistolicum or a year → pointer Merton 1957, the passage at footnote 70 ('anonymously wrote the preface for the second published report-the draft is in his handwriting')."

[[entity-robert-merton|Robert K. Merton]]'s 1957 paper "Priorities in
Scientific Discovery" — the founding text behind the vault's existing
[[claim-merton-priority-disputes-institutional-norm-enforcement|institutional-norm
account of priority disputes]], there sourced only to Merton's later 1988
restatement — describes how "the effort to safeguard priority and to have
proof of one's integrity has led to a variety of institutional arrangements
designed to cope with this strain on the system of rewards," and treats the
Newton–Leibniz calculus dispute as the leading instance. When the Royal
Society, with Newton as its sitting president, set up **a committee to
adjudicate the rival claims**, Newton **packed the committee, helped
direct** its activities, and — in Merton's account — anonymously wrote the
preface for the committee's second published report, the draft of which is
in his own handwriting. (The committee's report itself was the 1712
*Commercium Epistolicum*; Merton names neither the report nor the year, so
that identification is the vault's, supplied from the linked Raphson
material, not from Merton's text.)

This is the same episode [[entity-joseph-raphson|Joseph Raphson]]'s 1715
*History of Fluxions* used Newton's own papers and correspondence to
support, already in the vault as
[[claim-raphson-1715-history-of-fluxions-used-newtons-papers-to-assert-priority-over-leibniz]]
and already linked from that note to this same Merton claim as "the
textbook case." Merton's sociological theory (priority fights as
institutional-norm enforcement) and the vault's documentary-source-criticism
material (Raphson's use of dated correspondence to adjudicate a rival claim)
turn out to be two disciplinary readings of one historical episode, not two
notes that merely resemble each other — see
[[observation-priority-adjudication-is-documentary-source-criticism]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary on sourcing mechanics:
> This PDF's extraction interleaves the journal's two print columns line by
> line, so most multi-line sentences don't survive as one contiguous string
> — several longer candidate quotes failed a groundedness check even though
> they're accurate readings of the page. I anchored each claim to the short
> spans that do pass and treated the connecting narrative (Newton's
> anonymous authorship, "in his handwriting") as direct-read paraphrase, not
> verbatim. That's a limitation of this particular scan, not a summarizing
> layer between me and the primary — I read the full 26 pages start to
> finish.
