Molybdenum-99, the medical isotope behind most nuclear-medicine scans, was historically produced by irradiating targets made of highly enriched uranium (HEU) — the same weapons-usable material a proliferator would want. This placed a live nonproliferation risk inside ordinary hospital supply logistics. Following a commitment made at the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit, the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) funded global Mo-99 producers (in countries including Belgium, South Africa, and the Netherlands) to switch their targets to low-enriched uranium (LEU).
