On the day [[entity-liu-xiaobo|Liu Xiaobo]] died in state custody (13 July 2017), the Norwegian Nobel Committee's chair, Berit Reiss-Andersen, issued a statement placing him in a named lineage: "He belongs to a heritage of former Nobel laureates such as Carl von Ossietzky, Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrei Sakharov, Lech Wałęsa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela and Shirin Ebadi, to mention a few." The comparison is the Committee's own, not an outside analyst's or a later retrospective — it is the institution characterizing its own prize history.

Two further facts sharpen the [[entity-carl-von-ossietzky|Ossietzky]] pairing specifically, though neither is carried by the statement itself. What the statement does say about the chair is narrower: "Liu Xiaobo's absence from the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony was marked by an empty chair. We now have to come to terms with the fact that his chair will forever remain empty." The wider framing — that 2010 was only the second occasion in the prize's history on which neither the laureate nor a representative could accept the award, the other being Ossietzky's in 1936 — comes from contemporaneous press coverage of the 2010 ceremony (Tier 3), not from the Committee, and is recorded here as corroborated-but-secondary. Liu is also reported as the first Peace laureate to die in state custody since Ossietzky, who died on 4 May 1938 in a Berlin hospital, still in police custody, of tuberculosis and the after-effects of his treatment in the concentration camps, two years after his prize was awarded in absentia; that comparison likewise rests on secondary coverage rather than on the statement. The statement's "heritage" framing is therefore not only rhetorical: it tracks a narrow, repeatable institutional pattern — a laureate punished by his own state for accepting the prize at all.
