**This note records a proposed bridge, not a documented lineage.** It carries
an `[unverified-mechanism/synthesis]` flag and must not be read as
established fact.

The setup (Tier 2, Mindell 2000): Harold Black's negative-feedback amplifier
needed Harry Nyquist's 1932 stability criterion and Hendrik Bode's constraint
analysis to become engineerable
([[claim-nyquist-bode-supplied-stability-math-black-lacked]]). This is the
founding result set of what's now called classical control theory.

The vault separately holds a well-sourced thread crediting 1950s–60s optimal
control theory — Pontryagin's maximum principle (1956), Bellman's dynamic
programming (1957), and specifically Kelley (1960) and Bryson (1961)'s
backward chain-rule gradient methods — as a direct mathematical precursor to
backpropagation ([[claim-kelley-bryson-optimal-control-precursor]],
[[moc-backpropagation-origins]]).

The bridge proposed here: that Nyquist/Bode-era classical control theory is
itself the mathematical ancestor of that later optimal-control lineage — one
generation upstream of Kelley and Bryson. The periodization is uncontested
(classical control in the 1930s–40s, optimal control in the 1950s–60s), but
no source read in this research chain states the transmission explicitly.

What is **not** established: whether Kelley, Bryson, Pontryagin, or Bellman
cited or drew on Nyquist/Bode's specific results, versus both bodies of work
