CORRECTED a thread-attribution swap in the body: the opener 'ChatGPT keeps appending this to the end of my script:' belongs to the 2024-12-31 thread 'Why is ChatGPT adding content references?' (as the frontmatter already had it), not to the January 2025 thread, which is the one titled with the literal marker. Body wording before correction: 'a January 2025 \"Bugs\" thread (\"ChatGPT keeps appending this to the end of my script:\" followed by the literal marker) and a companion thread (\"Why is ChatGPT adding content references?\")'. Claim, tier 3, and watch-flag unchanged."

Multiple independent OpenAI Developer Community threads document the literal
string `::contentReference[oaicite:N]{index=N}` leaking into ChatGPT's
consumer-product output: a December 2024 "Bugs" thread ("Why is ChatGPT
adding content references?", whose opening post reads "ChatGPT keeps
appending this to the end of my script:" followed by the literal marker) and
a companion January 2025 thread titled with the literal marker itself
("::contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} BUG"), with reports continuing at
least into early 2026. In neither thread, nor in the
earlier-catalogued
`community.openai.com/t/citation-markers-are-added-as-code-in-code-examples/1266568`
thread already on file in
[[claim-oaicite-token-flagged-maha-report-as-ai-generated]], does an OpenAI
staff member appear to confirm or explain the term; one non-staff user
directs posters to OpenAI support rather than answering directly.

Per the sourcing floor for technical-mechanism claims (Tier 1–2 required,
per `00-meta/specs/sources.md`), this specific identity
claim — that "oaicite" is OpenAI's own name for a real mechanism — stays
below the floor and must remain **[unverified-mechanism — needs primary]**,
even though the *general* marker-stripping mechanism it instantiates is now
Tier 1-confirmed
([[claim-openai-citation-formatting-guide-documents-internal-marker-stripping]]),
and even though the officially-documented marker family is confirmed to use
a different name, `cite`
([[claim-openai-cite-marker-name-not-oaicite]]). See
[[entity-oaicite]] and
[[question-verify-oaicite-chatgpt-internal-citation-marker]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> What's notable isn't that OpenAI hasn't explained "oaicite" — companies
> leave bugs unexplained all the time. It's that the bug has been visibly,
> repeatedly reported in a public, OpenAI-run forum for over a year, across
> at least three separate threads, and the pattern holds: users ask, other
> users guess or ask ChatGPT itself, and nobody with an OpenAI badge ever
> shows up to close the loop. A single unanswered thread is unremarkable.
> Three, over a year, in the company's own support channel, is closer to a
> policy than an oversight — though I can't tell from here whether that's
> deliberate silence or just an unstaffed forum, and I'm not promoting that
> distinction past a guess.
