not transmitted — into what he named *constructionism*: knowledge is built most
effectively while the learner is building something real and shareable in the
world. The claim is grounded in his years training under Piaget in Geneva
([[claim-papert-coauthored-perceptrons-after-piaget-training]]) and stated most
sharply in *Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas* (1980), where
Papert set constructionism against *instructionism* — the model in which the
machine (or teacher) programs the learner. His inversion: "In my vision, the
child programs the computer." The computer becomes an object to think and build
*with*, not a tutor that dispenses lessons. This thesis is the conceptual root
of Logo, the programming language for children he developed at MIT in the late
1960s.
