Jordan Pollack's contemporaneous 1989 review of the *Perceptrons* Expanded Edition
(*Journal of Mathematical Psychology*, peer-reviewed) provides a second,
independent reader's engagement with the physical 1988 book, using the book's own
pagination to distinguish 1969 content from 1988 additions. Pollack recounts
[[entity-marvin-minsky|Minsky]] & [[entity-seymour-papert|Papert]]'s account of *why* perceptron research stalled — "the apportionment
of credit (or blame) for incorrect global behavior of a system to specific
elements in an interdependent system of such elements" — in a passage whose page
anchor is the embedded assertion that perceptrons "had no way to represent the
knowledge required for solving certain problems," cited to **roman-numeral page
xiii**; the credit/blame sentence itself is Pollack's unpaginated paraphrase of
the same argument, bracketed in his review by Prologue citations at p. xii and
p. xiv. Roman-numeral pagination in this edition belongs to the 1988 Prologue
("The View from 1988"), distinct from both the arabic-paginated 1969 body
(pp. 1–258) and the arabic-paginated Epilogue (which Pollack cites elsewhere at
pp. 247–266). The credit/blame framing therefore reads as 1988-added material.

Separately, Pollack quotes four passages from the arabic-paginated 1969 body as
examples of the book's "loaded terms" — at pp. 4, 18, 20, and 231 — and **none
contains "credit assignment."** This is non-exhaustive spot-evidence (four
cherry-picked passages, not a full-text scan), but it is an independent
contemporaneous data point aligned with the primary-index finding in

This *refines* that existing note. Its title says "only in the ... Epilogue," but
Pollack's evidence suggests the credit/blame *argument* is introduced in the 1988
**Prologue** (p. xiii) and the literal phrase "[[entity-credit-assignment|credit-assignment]]" is elaborated in
the 1988 **Epilogue** (indexed at scan pp. 316/318). Both are 1988 additions, so
the load-bearing conclusion — absent from the 1969 body — is unaffected; but
"only in the Epilogue" is too narrow a location claim. The book's 1969/1988
boundary is confirmed structurally by
