Lev Pontryagin (1908–1988) lost his sight at fourteen in a primus-stove
explosion. His mother, Tatyana Andreevna, who had no mathematical training, read
research papers and books aloud to him — including work by Heinz Hopf, J. H. C.
Whitehead, and Hassler Whitney — and, unable to name the symbols she encountered,
improvised spoken glosses for them: she called the set-union symbol ∪ "tails up."
There was no formal tactile apparatus and no braille mathematics; the system was
an ad hoc, family-invented *oral* notation that sustained decades of first-rank
work in topology and, later, control theory.

That later work is directly connected to a thread the vault already maps.
Pontryagin, with Boltyanskii, Gamkrelidze, and Mishchenko, formalized the
*maximum principle* of optimal control (Lenin Prize, 1962) — the Soviet-side twin
of the American gradient/adjoint lineage recorded in

[[claim-recht-adjoints-equivalence-not-transmission]], developed under Cold War
rocketry pressure with no connection to the Dreyfus/Kelley/Bryson citation
