Portuguese chess terminology (19th-c. attestation in Murray) recorded 'mitra' as an alternate name for the bishop-equivalent piece

In the comparative footnote (n. 24, p. 424) where H.J.R. Murray lists European forms for the "Bishop or other ecclesiastic" naming category of the Aufin (the Arabic al-fil piece), the Portuguese entry reads "bispo, mitra" — i.e., Portuguese usage recorded not only bispo ("bishop," the ecclesiastic-title form shared with English and Latin; the Old French form in the same list is cornu, "horned") but also mitra ("mitre") itself as an alternate name for the same piece. In Murray's century notation both Portuguese forms carry the mark "9" — attested in 19th-century sources, roughly four centuries after the English mitre description Minsheu dates to 1499. This is a second European attestation of the mitre association, distinct from the English case documented at claim-minsheu-1627-describes-chess-bishop-as-mitre-shaped (which Murray gives in a different footnote, n. 27, p. 425). Whether the Portuguese reading arose independently or by borrowing from the by-then-established English usage, Murray does not say: the footnote records the forms, not their route.

Murray's footnote lists this alongside other ecclesiastic-naming outliers — Icelandic biskup and a Bohemian dialect form meaning "priest" — suggesting the "read the shape as clergy" naming choice recurs at more than one European stop, not just England. This note records the Portuguese leg alone; the wider cluster is not worked up here.
