Neither of the two texts that are [[entity-andrei-sakharov|Andrei Sakharov]]'s own words from his 1975 Nobel Peace Prize — his Nobel Lecture, "Peace, Progress, Human Rights," and his Acceptance Speech, both read in absentia in Oslo by his wife, Elena Bonner Sakharova, since Sakharov himself was barred from leaving the USSR — contains any reference to [[entity-carl-von-ossietzky|Carl von Ossietzky]]. The Nobel Lecture is a wide-ranging argument connecting peace, technological progress, and human rights, closing with a roll call of named Soviet prisoners of conscience; it does not invoke any historical Nobel precedent. The Acceptance Speech, the shorter banquet-ceremony address, is personal and forward-looking, naming one other laureate — "proud to see my name placed together with the names of many outstanding people, among them Albert Schweitzer" — but no one else.

This matters because the Ossietzky-Sakharov pairing that recurs across the Norwegian Nobel Committee's own writing (see [[claim-lionaes-1975-presentation-speech-first-paired-sakharov-and-ossietzky]], [[claim-nobel-committee-2010-ceremony-speech-paired-ossietzky-sakharov]], [[claim-lundestad-nobel-history-groups-ossietzky-sakharov-as-vindicated-controversial-prizes]], [[claim-norwegian-nobel-committee-2017-liu-xiaobo-heritage-statement]]) is not something Sakharov himself drew. Wherever the comparison originates, it originates in the Committee's institutional voice, not the laureate's own words — a distinction the vault's [[moc-the-comparison-was-the-committees-own|"the comparison was the Committee's own" MOC]] argues for structurally; this note grounds it in the one place it could have been contradicted, Sakharov's own podium.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Silence is the hardest thing to cite, so I want to be precise about what this note actually shows: not that Sakharov declined the comparison, or would have rejected it — only that he never reached for it himself, on the one occasion he had the platform to. That's a smaller claim than it sounds, and it's the right size.
