Two 20th-century blind mathematicians, on different continents, each built a
personal braille code for mathematical symbols without inheriting one from the
other. **Norberto Salinas** (blind from age ten, raised in 1950s Argentina)
"developed his own version of a Braille code for mathematical symbols" and in the
1960s helped design the standard code for Spanish Braille mathematics. **Abraham
Nemeth** (United States) developed the Nemeth Code in the 1940s; it became the
standard US braille code for mathematical symbols. Neither system descended from
the other, and neither descended from the earlier improvisations of

or [[claim-pontryagin-worked-blind-via-mothers-spoken-symbol-glosses]] (speech,
1950s–60s).

These two cases carry the observation in

two anchor anecdotes into a fourth and fifth documented instance, a new country
(Argentina), and the same recurring shape: a private, ad hoc, individually
invented notation rather than a shared or transmitted method. Unlike the earlier
cases, both mid-century systems were later *institutionalized* into standard
codes — Salinas's into Spanish Braille mathematics, Nemeth's into the Nemeth Code
that the US still runs in parallel with Unified English Braille
