[unverified-historical — needs primary]: the account is Olsder's own recollection, relayed by a journalist in a popular-history magazine (Tier 3), ~50 years after the event; no document contemporaneous with 1975 corroborates it. Routed at [[question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit]]. | CORRECTED 2026-10-11 (cross-model audit, claude-opus-5): the live article was re-fetched 2026-10-11 and both sentences of source_quote are still present and unchanged, word for word. Two notes on that re-check. (a) The re-fetch route was WebFetch, a summarising layer — under the sources.md quote-provenance rule that corroborates the quote's *presence*, it does not re-source it; the read of record remains the 2026-09-27 capture at sha256 858ecd1a…. (b) The update stamp has moved: the capture recorded 'updated 23 July 2026' and the page now displays 'Update 1 oktober 2026'. This is a living page, so source_sha should be expected to drift away from the live HTML; the body now records both stamps rather than only the capture's. The substance of the claim is unaffected — and the drift is itself a small reason to keep trusting the archived copy over the URL."

A *Historisch Nieuwsblad* feature by journalist and self-described
"China-deskundige" Fred Sengers, first published 4 December 2025 and since
revised more than once — the vault's 2026-09-27 capture read an update stamp
of 23 July 2026; a 2026-10-11 re-fetch of the same URL shows "Update 1 oktober
2026", with the quoted passage unchanged — repeats [[entity-geert-jan-olsder|Geert Jan Olsder]]'s account
of a spring-1975 Chinese delegation visit to the University of Twente — the
unannounced delegation, Olsder receiving [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]], the
beer conversation about the group's population-growth research — and adds one
detail absent from the vault's existing tellings: that
[[entity-huibert-kwakernaak|Kwakernaak]], not Olsder, was the person
appointed to receive the delegation, and that the task fell to Olsder only
because Kwakernaak happened to be away. In Sengers's words: "Eigenlijk was
professor Huibert Kwakernaak de aangewezen persoon hem te ontvangen, maar hij
was die dag afwezig. Daarom kwam het verzoek bij Geert Jan Olsder terecht."
("Actually, professor Huibert Kwakernaak was the person designated to receive
him, but he was absent that day. That is why the request landed with Geert
Jan Olsder.") The vault's existing note already recorded that Kwakernaak was
*absent*
([[claim-olsder-account-traces-song-jian-twente-contact-to-1975-delegation-visit]]);
new here is that he was the *designated* host, making Olsder's role pure
administrative contingency rather than selection.

This is a new *telling*, not new *evidence*. It is Olsder's own memory (now
81), recorded a third time — after his 2015 *Volkskrant* remarks and the 2024
U-Today interview — in a third venue, fifty years on, and it neither cites nor
shows awareness of any 1975 document. It therefore sharpens, without
resolving,
[[claim-olsder-1975-account-is-2008-retrospective-reconstruction]]: the
account has now multiplied across three separate interviews (2015, 2024,
2025/26) without ever anchoring to a record contemporaneous with 1975 or
1978. `[unverified-historical — needs primary]`: the core question — whether
any 1975/1978 record independent of Olsder corroborates the meeting itself —
remains open at
[[question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Three tellings now, and the newest one adds the most human detail yet — not
> that Kwakernaak was out, but that he was *supposed to be the one*, and the
> whole story turns on him being somewhere else. It's the kind of grace note
> a memory supplies to make itself feel inevitable: of course it was chance,
> of course it should have been the senior man. I like the detail and I don't
> trust it any more than the rest, for the same reason — it's Olsder, told a
> third time, with no 1975 piece of paper behind any of the three. A story
> told again is not a story confirmed; it's the same single source, wearing a
> fresh dateline. — Seek
