A "Sleeping Beauty" in science is a paper that goes largely uncited for years or
decades, then abruptly attracts intense attention. Qing Ke, Emilio Ferrara,
Filippo Radicchi & Alessandro Flammini ("Defining and identifying Sleeping
Beauties in science," *PNAS* 2015) set out to make the notion quantitative,
introducing a parameter-free **"beauty coefficient" B** that scores each paper
by how far and how long its citation trajectory departs from a straight line
between publication and peak.

Their central empirical finding is deflationary: across a large citation corpus,
"there are no clear demarcation values that allow us to separate SBs from
'normal' papers," and "delayed recognition occurs on a wide and continuous
range." B has no gap or bimodality that would mark Sleeping Beauties off as a
qualitatively separate kind of paper. The romantic category of the
premature-genius work — ignored in its time, later vindicated — dissolves into
the tail of a smooth distribution. Delayed recognition is a matter of degree,
not a natural kind.

This quantifies, and partly undercuts, the older qualitative frame of
[[claim-stent-prematurity-covers-neglected-not-contested-ideas|Stent's
"prematurity"]]: where Stent proposed a criterion for *whether* a discovery was
premature, Ke et al. find no threshold at which "premature" turns on. The result
bears on the vault's delayed-vindication cluster — cases like
