Four defects found and fixed, all on the Stavnichuk side. (1) The blockquote was attributed to Results and was a splice: its lead clause is the Methods sentence under 'Stratifying density measures by skeletal region', but its region names ('upper limbs and thoracic vertebrae', 'pelvis and lumbar vertebrae') are the Results wording, whose own sentence begins 'We examined changes in bone density in four skeletal regions'. Neither location contains the sentence as it was quoted. Replaced with the Methods sentence verbatim, correctly located. (2) 'from 25 studies' — 25 is the total article count for the whole meta-analysis; bone density comes from 12 of them (Fig. 1a: 11 bone-density + 1 both). Corrected to 12. (3) 'lower-limb bones (hip, femur, tibia, heel)' — unsupported: Fig. 2's own legend places pelvis in region 3 and enumerates no bones for region 4, and the heel is the only lower-limb bone the Results report individually. Parenthetical removed. (4) 'pooled areal-density estimate' / 'Areal BMD' — wrong, and weaker than the truth: the pool contains qCT, which is volumetric, alongside three areal methods, held together by the authors' stated assumption that any method measures 'the same quantity'. Title and body now say 'bone density', which is what the paper measures and what makes the note's own point sharper. Editorial brackets around '[DXA]' dropped — the paper writes DXA plainly. A Stavnichuk locator (doi:10.1038/s41526-020-0103-2) added to the body, since the note argues about a second document the frontmatter does not name. Everything on the Böcker side checked clean and is unchanged. Prior wording preserved above."

The two most-cited spaceflight bone-loss numbers in this cluster describe
different quantities measured different ways, and treating them as the same kind
of figure about the same kind of bone overstates what either paper established.

Stavnichuk's "−0.8%/month, lower limbs" figure
([[claim-spaceflight-bmd-loss-lower-limbs-about-0-8-percent-per-month]];
Stavnichuk et al., *npj Microgravity* 6:13, 2020, doi:10.1038/s41526-020-0103-2)
is a pooled estimate drawn across instruments that do not all measure the same
physical quantity. Its "region 4" is the lower limbs as a whole, pooled from
the 12 bone-density studies among the meta-analysis's 25 selected articles,
using "projection radiography, SPA, DXA, and qCT" — three areal methods and one
volumetric one. The paper treats them as interchangeable by explicit assumption:
"We assumed that any method used to measure bone density provides different
degrees of precision and accuracy in assessment of the same quantity." It then
tests that assumption only for non-difference — the authors "directly assessed
that bone measurements obtained in the lower limb region using projection
radiography, SPA, DXA, and qCT were not significantly different (p = 0.57 by
ANOVA)." It spans missions from Gemini through ISS — four-plus decades of
instruments.

Böcker's "bone loss was comparable" result

by contrast, is a single study using one imaging modality — peripheral
quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) — at four specific sites along one bone
(the tibia, at 4%, 38%, 66%, and 98% of its length), reporting *volumetric*
bone mineral content on 13 space travelers from one ESA/DLR cohort. A
percentage change in "bone density" pooled across a whole limb region and four
imaging methods is not volumetric BMC at four tibial sub-sites by one
calibrated instrument. That the two devices Böcker used
were cross-calibrated against a shared phantom
([[claim-bocker-matched-comparison-is-site-matched-not-duration-matched]])
sharpens the contrast: Böcker went to lengths for instrument consistency that
Stavnichuk's pooling design deliberately sets aside. A reader who reads
"−0.8%/month" and "bone loss comparable" as the same measurement is making an
inference neither paper licenses.
