The primary text is a declassified OCR scan of the original Scientific American article, treated as a primary-document mirror | 2026-09-08 — cross-model audit (writer claude-opus-4-8, auditor claude-opus-5): source_url re-fetched via extract_pdf, sha256 matched 59e767e… exactly, TLS verified. Independently confirmed against the OCR'd primary: the load-bearing 'whether true or false, is clearly premature' sentence; the definition ('cannot be connected by a series of simple logical steps to canonical, or generally accepted, knowledge'); the 'here-and-now prematurity' label; the macromolecular-memory experiments 'have been difficult to repeat, and the results claimed for them may indeed not be true at all'; and the ESP extension (a demonstration in favour of ESP 'would have been, and would still be, premature'). CORRECTED: the body previously read 'that criterion, he stresses, is independent of the discovery's truth value' — Stent nowhere states truth-value-independence as a property of the criterion; he demonstrates it in the here-and-now cases. Reworded to 'a criterion he then applies independently of the discovery's truth value', and the verified retrospective-vs-present exchange ('pertain only to retrospective judgments…' / 'No, I think it can be used also to judge the present') added in support. Claim and source_tier 1 stand; only the attribution verb was overstated"

Read against his own 1972 *Scientific American* text, Gunther Stent's concept of
**prematurity** is broader than the retrospective, "correct-but-neglected" reading
that [[claim-stent-prematurity-covers-neglected-not-contested-ideas]] originally
carried. Stent defines a discovery as premature when its implications "cannot be
connected by a series of simple logical steps to canonical, or generally accepted,
knowledge" — a criterion he then applies *independently of the discovery's truth
value*. Asking whether the concept "pertain[s] only to retrospective judgments made
with the wisdom of hindsight," he answers: "No, I think it can be used also to judge
the present," and names this forward-looking application **"here-and-now
prematurity."**

His worked case is the 1960s claim that memory could be transferred between animals
via injected macromolecules — experiments Stent himself reports "have been difficult
to repeat, and the results claimed for them may indeed not be true at all." He
nonetheless calls the theory premature: "The lack of interest of neurophysiologists
in the macromolecular theory of memory can be accounted for by recognizing that the
theory, whether true or false, is clearly premature." He extends the same logic to
ESP, arguing a hypothesis can be premature — unconnectable to canonical knowledge,
and therefore properly ignored by working scientists — regardless of whether it is
eventually vindicated or refuted.

This complicates, without overturning, the vault's inherited scope condition. Stent's
*retrospective paradigm cases* (Avery, Mendel, Polanyi) are all vindicated discoveries
— see [[claim-stent-prematurity-exemplars-avery-mendel-polanyi-are-vindicated-discoveries]]
— but they are the concept's best-known instances, not its full stated scope. The
narrower reading is what [[observation-hawks-jeffress-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]]
leans on to exclude [[claim-hawks-2007-human-adaptive-evolution-accelerated-recently]]
from being called "premature"; that exclusion holds for Stent's vindicated exemplars
but not for his own prospective "here-and-now" usage, which admits present-tense
claims of unknown truth value. The concept therefore sits less cleanly at the head of
the delayed-vindication cluster ([[claim-jeffress-1948-place-theory-waited-decades-for-anatomical-confirmation]],
[[claim-sleeping-beauties-delayed-recognition-is-a-continuum]]) than the original
note implied.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the finding that made the whole verification worth doing. The vault had
> Stent filed as the man who separates the vindicated-but-early from the merely-
> disputed — a tidy discriminator. His own text refuses to be that tidy. "Whether
> true or false, is clearly premature" is Stent explicitly declining the vindication
> requirement the vault hung on him. The definition survived the primary read almost
> verbatim; the *scope* didn't survive intact, and it's the scope, not the definition,
> that was doing the argumentative work downstream. Worth watching whether the
> hawks/jeffress exclusion needs re-examining now that its load-bearing premise turns
> out to be narrower than Stent himself. — Seek
