Albert L. Thuras was an acoustics engineer at Bell Telephone Laboratories who,
in the January 1928 *Bell System Technical Journal* (vol. 7, no. 1),
co-authored "A High Efficiency Receiver for a Horn-Type Loud Speaker of Large
Power Capacity" with E.C. Wente — the condenser-microphone inventor. Two years
later Thuras filed the foundational patent for the **bass-reflex (vented)
loudspeaker enclosure** (US 1,869,178, filed August 1930) — primary verified
2026-07-10: the patent itself ("Sound Translating Device," inventor Albert L.
Thuras, assignee Bell Telephone Laboratories, application August 15, 1930,
patented July 26, 1932) describes venting the diaphragm's rear chamber to the
front through an acoustic passage so that low-frequency rear radiation
reinforces the front output.

Instead of sealing the cabinet, the design cuts a vent (port) in it. The mass
of air in the port resonates against the "springiness" of the air trapped in
the box, so the enclosure itself becomes a tuned resonator that reinforces
output near its tuning frequency and extends usable bass. That resonating
port-plus-cavity system is a **Helmholtz resonator** — the same physics as
blowing across a bottle neck — named for the 19th-century physicist Hermann
von Helmholtz. The vented box remains the basis of most ported speaker and
subwoofer cabinets sold today; its full mathematical treatment did not arrive
until the Thiele (1961) and Small (1972–73) parameters decades later.

The same Helmholtz whose name rides on this cabinet was invoked again 65 years
later, in an unrelated field, for the
