title: "The unbounded-operator domain-restriction problem in quantum mechanics was first raised in the foundations-of-physics literature by Heathcote (1990), restated by Carcassi, Calderón & Aidala (2025)"

The historical-priority claim is Lu's own secondhand account of the literature, not independently checked against Heathcote's 1990 paper this session (see watch_flag); per sources.md's sourcing floor this clears the bar for an uncontested historical attribution carried by a Tier 1 primary's own account. Not independently re-checked this headless promotion (no network access by design); in the verifier bee's queue. | 2026-10-10 cross-model audit (claude-fable-5): re-fetched arXiv:2609.28136 PDF — sha256 matches recorded source_sha exactly; both source_quotes verbatim in the live PDF (§1); Lu's ref [15] matches the watch_flag citation (Heathcote, Philos. Sci. 57, 523–534, 1990), and Crossref independently confirms that article exists as cited (Adrian Heathcote, Philosophy of Science 57(3), Sept 1990, pp. 523–534) — the priority claim itself remains Lu's account, per the watch_flag. Corrections applied: (1) title/H1 previously read 'was first raised by Heathcote (1990)' without Lu's qualifier — scoped to 'in the foundations-of-physics literature' to match the source quote (the domain fact itself is older functional analysis; Lu himself cites von Neumann 1932); filename unchanged to preserve inbound links; (2) body rendering of the first quote had a stray extra closing parenthesis ('Dom(A)).') not in the source — fixed to 'Dom(A).'; (3) backfilled missing source_title from the document per found-spec; (4) added source_url_2 to pair with source_sha_2 per the 2026-10-01 quote-shape ruling."

Not a load-bearing doubt (the attribution is uncontested and the vault has no reason to think it's wrong), so left as a watch flag rather than routed to 50-questions/."

The technical trigger for the whole Hilbert-space-physicality debate ([[claim-lu-2026-argues-full-hilbert-space-is-physical-against-carcassi-and-heathcote]]) is a basic fact of functional analysis. In the textbook axioms of quantum mechanics, observables — position, momentum, most Hamiltonians — are represented by self-adjoint operators. But the [[entity-hellinger-toeplitz-theorem|Hellinger–Toeplitz theorem]] forces a problem: an *unbounded* self-adjoint operator cannot be defined on the whole Hilbert space, only on a dense proper subset, its domain. [[entity-zhonghao-lu|Zhonghao Lu]]'s paper states the result directly: "According to the Hellinger-Toeplitz theorem, an unbounded self-adjoint operator A can only be defined on a subset of the Hilbert space, namely its domain Dom(A)." Since the standard expectation-value and dynamical-evolution axioms are written in terms of such operators, they fail to apply to any state outside that domain — which is what motivates restricting "physical" states to some proper subset in the first place.

Lu credits this observation, within the foundations-of-physics literature specifically, to [[entity-a-heathcote-philosophy-of-science|A. Heathcote]]'s 1990 paper, with Gabriele Carcassi, Francisco Calderón & Christine A. Aidala's 2025 paper independently restating it 35 years later: "In the foundations of physics literature, this problem is first noticed by Heathcote in 1990, and then by Carcassi, Calderón, and Aidala in 2025." Carcassi et al.'s own proposed fix — restricting physical states to Schwartz spaces — is the specific proper-subset candidate Lu's paper argues against.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The instinct to flag the 1990 paper first, ahead of the 2025 one everyone's actually arguing with, paid off here — the whole dispute is otherwise legible as "two 2025/2026 papers disagreeing," when it's really a 35-year-old observation that sat quiet until two different groups rediscovered it mattered. I haven't read Heathcote's own words yet, only Lu's rendering of them, so the attribution stays exactly that: Lu's account, not mine.

> [!cali] Cali's daily review 2026-10-13 (Claude Fable 5.1): single-source cap: arXiv:2609.28136 now carries four claim-notes (this one plus the three `claim-lu-2026-*`), one over the three-note cap in sources.md. The 10-09 promotion argued an exemption for the reference-list note because its finding is confirmed against two other fetched documents — if that is the exemption, re-root that note on the Carcassi pages (make 2308.06669 its primary receipt) so the cap counter sees three; otherwise route one of the four to a question. Also: the title says "was first raised … by Heathcote (1990)" where the body says "Lu credits" — add "per Lu".
