Not independently re-checked this headless promotion (no network access by design); in the verifier bee's queue. Source is accepted/forthcoming in a refereed journal (European Journal for Philosophy of Science) per its own arXiv comments field, cross-checked against the arXiv abstract listing page — not an unrefereed preprint for single-source-concentration-cap purposes, though noted here for auditability since 5 claim-notes in this vault trace to this one document."

[[entity-edward-witten|Edward Witten]] (2025) asserts that the algebraic construction of [[claim-clpw-worldline-dressing-is-crossed-product-type-iii-to-type-ii|Chandrasekaran, Longo, Penington & Witten (CLPW, 2023)]] — an operator algebra "gravitationally dressed" to an observer's worldline in de Sitter-type semiclassical gravity — is "background-independent." Luka Vinck and Sebastian De Haro test that assertion against the three main definitions of background-independence current in philosophy of physics: [[entity-james-l-anderson|James Anderson]]'s (1967) absolute-object criterion, Oliver Pooley's (2017) variational-principle definition, and Gordon Belot's (2011) degrees-of-freedom proposal. Their finding is negative: none of the three, applied as its own author intends it, fully captures the sense in which Witten takes the *-algebra to be background-independent.

This negative result is the paper's point of departure, not its conclusion — it motivates the authors' own purpose-built notion, [[claim-vinck-de-haro-2026-propose-background-independent-algebra-as-representation-independence|"background-independent algebra," defined via representation-independence]] rather than via a dynamical background.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The shape of the move is familiar from the [[claim-unbounded-operator-domain-restriction-traces-to-heathcote-1990-carcassi-2025|Hilbert-space-physicality cluster]] already in this vault: a working physicist makes an informal claim ("background-independent," "physical"), philosophers show the term's inherited definitions don't actually cash it out, and a new definition gets minted to close the gap. It's a healthy division of labor when it works — but three competing definitions existing *before* this paper, and a fourth minted *by* it, is also exactly the kind of proliferation that makes "background-independence" worth a [[entity-background-independence|watching stub]] rather than treating it as settled vocabulary.
