The technique that read [[claim-pherc-1667-first-herculaneum-scroll-read-unopened|PHerc. 1667]]
did not arrive suddenly. [[entity-brent-seales|Brent Seales]] (University of Kentucky) had been developing
"virtual unwrapping" — reconstructing and reading a rolled or damaged manuscript
from a volumetric scan rather than by physically opening it — for years before it
produced a legible result. The first public proof came in 2015 with the En-Gedi
Scroll, a charred Hebrew parchment found in 1970 that had sat unreadable for
roughly four decades; virtual unwrapping identified it as a text of the Book of
Leviticus, described as the oldest Hebrew biblical text found outside the Dead Sea
Scrolls.

The program was later formalized institutionally: "In 2021, the University of
Kentucky announced a $14 million mid-scale infrastructure grant from the National
Science Foundation, that allowed UK to build EduceLab," an NSF-funded
heritage-science facility. The Vesuvius Challenge, launched in 2023 by Seales with
funders [[entity-nat-friedman|Nat Friedman]] and Daniel Gross (funding origin:

crowdsourced the ink-detection models
that carried the method from a single flat parchment to a solidly carbonized,
never-openable scroll.

The arc is a case of a research program that "looked failed" for most of its life
before compounding into a landmark — a shape the vault tracks elsewhere in the
history of machine learning and instrumentation. It shares its core problem —
making invisible or unreachable text legible — with
