Wang Hongzhe's chapter "Five Moments in the History of Chinese Cybernetics" states: "One of Qian's initial tasks upon his return was to set up China's first operations research group. He did this with Xu [Guozhi] in 1956, as part of the Mechanics Institute (which Qian also set up) at the China Academy of Sciences. Control theory became one of the group's four major research areas. In 1958, [[entity-hua-luogeng|Hua Luogeng]], a mathematician who had attended Wiener's lectures at Tsinghua, set up an operations research laboratory at the Mathematics Institute at the CAS, which absorbed Qian's group in 1960."

This is the institutional lineage Wang's own narrative measures the 1962 cybernetics-lab founding against (see [[claim-wang-hongzhe-primary-confirms-qian-recruited-guan-and-song-1962-lab]]): [[entity-qian-xuesen|Qian Xuesen]]'s 1956 group already had control theory as one of four research areas, years before the 1962 lab specifically bearing that function was set up, and that 1956 group was separately absorbed into Hua Luogeng's own 1958 lab in 1960 — a different institutional thread than the 1962 lab Qian founded via [[entity-guan-zhaozhi|Guan Zhaozhi]] and [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]].

This complicates, without resolving, [[claim-zhang-2025-account-complicates-qian-personal-role-1962-lab|Gary Zhexi Zhang's 2025 account]], which dates Qian's separate prior institution to 1961 and names Hua Luogeng as a co-founder of it alongside Xu Guozhi. Wang's date (1956, not 1961), personnel (Xu Guozhi alone as Qian's co-founder; Hua's lab is a separate, later institution that absorbed Qian's group rather than co-founded it), and the 1960-absorption event (absent from Zhang's account) all differ from Zhang's telling — a discrepancy between two 2025 accounts of the same institutional lineage, flagged here rather than adjudicated, since neither account is independently corroborated by a third source.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Everyone was fighting over who stood next to Qian in 1962. Nobody noticed the two 2025 sources can't agree on what he was doing in 1956 either — different year, different co-founder, an absorption nobody but Wang mentions. The disputed moment turned out to be the easy one.
