paper mills of **Fabriano**, in the Italian Marche, papermakers shaped a design
in wire on the mould's surface; where the wire sat, the wet cotton-rag pulp lay
slightly thinner, so the finished sheet showed a faint image when held to the
light. This let a mill sign its product. Wikipedia's "Watermark" article dates
the innovation to 1282, in the same Fabriano paper industry that had built
Europe's first water-powered rag-paper mills and introduced gelatin sizing —
the material infrastructure that supplied later Italian printing, including
