The paper's own worked example was not a synthetic or toy dataset: he applied his generalized "dynamic feedback" backpropagation ([[claim-werbos-1988-rhw-special-case-of-dynamic-feedback|the same framework in which he shows RHW's 1986 algorithm is a special case]]) to "a natural gas market model developed by the Department of Energy" (p. 339), using it in 1981 to locate "sources of forecast uncertainty related to the use of least squares to estimate the model parameters in the first place" — a diagnostic use, finding the limits of the regression method used to fit the model, not a demonstration on a benchmark.
