Both award claims, previously Wikipedia-only, now rest on IEEE's own
documents (fetched and read directly at capture level):

- **1995, IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award** — joint: "1995, Michael A.
Arbib, Nils J. Nilsson and [[entity-paul-werbos|Paul J. Werbos]]" (*IEEE Computational
Intelligence Magazine*, May 2006, official awardee list 1991–2006; the
CIS webpage itself bot-blocks with HTTP 418, so the magazine record is
the reachable Tier 1). The widely-quoted 1995 citation prose ("for the
discovery of backpropagation…") appears only in Tier 2–3 retellings —
  [unverified-quote — needs primary] if ever load-bearing.
- **2022, IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award** — solo, verbatim from IEEE's
recipients PDF: "For development of backpropagation and fundamental
contributions to reinforcement learning and time series analysis."
Context from the same document: [[entity-john-hopfield|Hopfield]] 2009, Vapnik 2012, Hinton 2014,
  Barto & Sutton 2026.

**Why this is myth-ledger material, not just biography.** IEEE's own Tier-1
award language — "development of backpropagation," under an award named for
Rosenblatt — is institutional circulation of the single-inventor compression
tracked at [[myth-werbos-invented-backpropagation]]. The myth entry names
award citations among its circulation venues; that receipt is now verified
at the primary. The accurate multi-discovery picture:
[[claim-reverse-mode-multiple-independent-discovery]],
[[claim-linnainmaa-priority-not-paternity]]. The earliest documented priority
sits with a Finnish master's thesis the award language silently overwrites:
[[claim-linnainmaa-thesis-identity]].
