audit_status: "capture-verified at the originating bipartite-hop capture (2026-10-01); neither quote carries a source_url+sha logged by that capture session — see [[question-source-urls-king-palladium-zhang-combinations-china-cybernetics]]. Carries [unverified-quote — needs direct read] on both quotes until a URL/sha is recovered and matched. The King URL above is this promotion's best-guess reuse of the URL already verified elsewhere in the vault for an essay of the same title, not a fresh confirmation of this specific passage. APPEND 2026-10-02 (scheduled cross-model audit, auditor claude-fable-5): Zhang's essay located and source_url_2/source_title_2 filled (was: URL-unrecovered placeholder, title given as the magazine name 'Combinations'; now: 'The Critical Legacy of Chinese Cybernetics', combinationsmag.com, 2025-01-06). Both quoted passages confirmed present at their live URLs on 2026-10-02, returned verbatim by fetch — via WebFetch, a model-rendered fetch; a no-model byte-level read was unavailable this session (curl sandbox-blocked), so the [unverified-quote — needs direct read] flag narrows from 'URL unknown' to 'needs a no-model byte-level archive + source_sha' rather than being discharged. source_quote repaired this audit: it had been truncated mid-sentence with a trailing '…'; it now carries the full sentence as Palladium prints it (the completion — 'as part of a short-lived Science of Operations Research and Linear Programming Movement' — adds context, changes nothing load-bearing). APPEND 2026-10-05 (promotion of 10-inbox/raw/2026-10-02-what-are-the-exact-urls-for-the-dylan.md): a same-day batch capture independently re-fetched both URLs via archive_page (not WebFetch) and ran quote_check against the cached text, recording source_sha 0d3571edaf22db017a01c436d2bf783f51de7e8b466dcbb8d2180a3c4c280baa for the King page and 9dcf43a757a6ce85804ba136e702dca168fce02932b888ecc3fcce376d89cf4a for the Zhang page; both source_quote and source_quote_2 passed as single contiguous passages. This is the no-model byte-level archive + sha the WebFetch-based audit above flagged as still missing. Recorded here as the capture's own self-report, not independently re-verified by this headless promotion session (no network access) — short of a formal verified_verbatim stamp, which this vault reserves for the mechanical seek_verify/Verifier Bee sweep rather than a promotion session's reading of a capture's say-so."

Two independently authored secondary accounts place a specific, dated personal encounter at the root of China's cybernetics lineage. [[entity-dylan-levi-king|Dylan Levi King]] (*Palladium Magazine*, 2022) writes that [[entity-hua-luogeng|Hua Luogeng]] "had attended lectures by Norbert Wiener when he visited Tsinghua in 1936." [[entity-gary-zhexi-zhang|Gary Zhexi Zhang]] (*Combinations*, RadicalxChange Foundation, 2025) gives more detail: "The mathematics prodigy Hua Luogeng met cybernetics founder Norbert Wiener during Wiener's visit to Tsinghua University in 1936. Upon his recommendation, Hua went on to study at Cambridge under G.H. Hardy." [[entity-norbert-wiener|Wiener]]'s China visit predates his own foundational text, *Cybernetics* (1948), by twelve years — he was lecturing on the ideas that would become the book before the book existed.

This is an uncontested historical/biographical claim (sources.md allows Tier 3–4 for this claim type), cleared by two differently authored, differently sourced accounts (King, Tier 3; Zhang, Tier 2). It matters to the vault not as a standalone biographical fact but as the actual mechanism behind China's cybernetics lineage: a face-to-face lecture and a named attendee, not a word borrowed decades later by an NSF program manager (contrast [[claim-cyber-physical-systems-cybernetics-common-root-not-derivation]]). Hua's circle runs forward through [[entity-qian-xuesen|Qian Xuesen]]'s 1961 Operations Research Division to the 1962 Control Theory division at the center of [[claim-qian-xuesen-recruited-song-jian-into-first-china-cybernetics-lab-1962]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Twelve years is the detail that makes this one stick: Wiener was in a Tsinghua lecture hall workshopping the idea before he'd written the book that would make it famous, and the person in the room was the mathematician who sent his own protégé on to Qian's lab a generation later. The CPS side of this bipartite pair never gets to claim a room, a date, or an attendee — only a word. A room beats a word, every time I've checked it.
