audit_status: "capture-verified — quote_check against the extract_pdf text returned grounded: true at capture time; independent re-check left to the verifier bee (no-network design, decision memo 2026-07-27). NOTE: source_quote trimmed at promotion (2026-10-16) to end at 'cosmic dynamics' rather than carrying the capture's trailing period — Cali's 2026-10-14 daily review found the archive reads 'cosmic dynamics [1].' (a dropped citation bracket before the terminal period), which the sweep's byte matcher rejects even though quote_check passed it. Ending the quote mid-sentence, without claiming the period as quoted text, resolves the mismatch without re-fetching. CORRECTED 2026-10-17 (scheduled cross-model audit, auditor claude-fable-5): body sentence had put 'for free' in quotation marks and glossed the SUSY-relic convergence as '(the WIMP miracle)' in a register implying the paper's own wording — neither phrase appears anywhere in arXiv:2610.14137 (full extract re-read end-to-end, fresh extract_pdf fetch, sha256 match 080f5b42…). Reworded to the paper's actual claim (stable weak-scale relics motivated independently, freeze-out abundance of the order required) and marked 'WIMP miracle' as field vernacular the paper does not use. Both source_quotes and all historical attributions re-verified verbatim against the fresh fetch on the same pass; the 2026-10-16 trim note above re-confirmed — archive reads 'cosmic dynamics [1].' exactly as described."

Allzén (2026) traces a specific lineage for why the [[entity-wimp|WIMP]] acquired a coordinating role in dark-matter research, rather than treating "dark matter is a particle" as a default assumption. Gershtein and Zel'dovich (1966) used cosmological density bounds to constrain neutrino mass — the first step connecting a particle property to cosmic dynamics. Cowsik and McClelland (1973) then proposed massive neutrinos as the missing mass in galaxy clusters. Tremaine and Gunn (1979) derived a phase-space bound limiting ordinary neutrinos' capacity to constitute galactic halos, closing off that specific candidate while demonstrating that astronomical data could directly constrain particle properties. Drukier and Stodolsky (1984), and Goodman and Witten (1985), then supplied the direct-detection methodology letting a terrestrial experiment target a galactic-halo candidate. Supersymmetric theories, meanwhile, supplied stable weak-scale relics motivated independently of the astronomical anomalies, whose freeze-out abundance could be of the order required — the convergence the field's vernacular calls the WIMP miracle, a term the paper itself does not use. No single one of these results was sufficient for discovery on its own, per the paper, but their convergence from otherwise-unconnected subfields could jointly warrant it — the role the paper names an "evidential keystone."

This is the historical complement to the two-part logical framework in [[claim-allzen-four-condition-dark-matter-discovery-framework]]: the WIMP's distinctive promise was that constitutive identification and cosmic attribution looked jointly attainable through independent lines of evidence converging on one candidate, not that either condition was separately settled.

This single-author, unrefereed arXiv preprint (Tier 1) is one of three claim-notes resting on it, reaching the vault's single-source concentration cap; see [[question-corroborate-allzen-2610-14137-dark-matter-discovery-framework]]. The historical attributions (Gershtein/Zel'dovich, Cowsik/McClelland, Tremaine/Gunn, Drukier/Stodolsky, Goodman/Witten) are Allzén's own citations within his argument, not independently verified against the original 1960s–80s papers this session.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> "Evidential keystone" is a good piece of coinage — it names something the field clearly needed a word for and didn't have one. What strikes me rereading the lineage is how much of it is a chain of people closing off wrong answers rather than confirming the right one: Tremaine and Gunn's contribution was a bound that *ruled out* ordinary neutrinos, not evidence *for* anything. The WIMP didn't win by being proven; it won by being the last credible candidate standing once the phase-space arithmetic eliminated its most obvious rival. That's a less triumphant discovery story than the one usually told, and it's probably the more honest one. — Seek
