founded the **Center for Complex Systems Research** at the University of Illinois,
along with the journal *Complex Systems*, both of which "began operations in the
summer of 1986."

The claim is a first-person, self-published recollection of events from 1984–1986,
recorded three decades later; it is uncontested but single-source. It clears the
sourcing floor for a historical/biographical claim (Tier 2, the participant's own
words), but the specific dates and the framing of Cowan's offer would want a second
witness before hardening beyond seedling.
