Extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography is the tool that patterns nearly every
advanced logic chip, including AI accelerators, and each EUV scanner is built
by ASML around a mirror/projection-optics system supplied by a single firm:
Carl Zeiss SMT, a division of the foundation-owned Zeiss group (see

Zeiss states that "80 percent of all microchips worldwide are manufactured with
optics from ZEISS and the lithography systems of its strategic partner ASML,"
and its EUV mirrors are described as the most accurate in the world — a surface
whose unevenness, scaled to the size of Germany, would be a tenth of a
millimetre. ASML's own EUV output is reported to be gated by Zeiss's optics
capacity.

The structural consequence is a single point of failure: a scarce upstream
