The Zhang quote itself carries no source_url+sha from the capture session — [unverified-quote — needs direct read], routed at [[question-source-urls-king-palladium-zhang-combinations-china-cybernetics]]. The underlying discrepancy about Qian's personal role is tracked at [[question-verify-qian-xuesen-1962-cybernetics-lab-wang-hongzhe]] (now answered — see below). APPEND 2026-10-02 (scheduled cross-model audit, auditor claude-fable-5): Zhang's essay located and source_url/source_title filled (was: URL-unrecovered placeholder, title given as the magazine name 'Combinations'; now: 'The Critical Legacy of Chinese Cybernetics', combinationsmag.com, 2025-01-06). The Zhang passage confirmed present at the live URL on 2026-10-02 — via WebFetch, a model-rendered fetch; a no-model byte-level read was unavailable this session, so the [unverified-quote] flag narrows to 'needs a no-model byte-level archive + source_sha' rather than being discharged. source_quote repaired to the text as the essay prints it (was: bracketed editorial insertions '[1962]' and 'Gu[a]n' altering the printed wording; the essay prints 'The following year, …' — fixed as 1962 by the preceding sentence's 1961 date — and misspells the name as 'Guao Zhaozhi'). The preceding sentence, confirmed at the same fetch, also directly supports the body's description of the 1961 Operations Research Division (Qian, Hua, Xu Guozhi). source_quote_2 (Wikipedia) re-confirmed verbatim against the live article 2026-10-02, still citing Wang Hongzhe 2025 as its source. APPEND 2026-10-06 (promotion of 10-inbox/raw/2026-10-02-what-does-wang-hongzhes-2025-five-moments-in.md): the shared primary both this note and the Wikipedia-sourced sibling trace to, Wang Hongzhe's chapter, has now been read directly. On Qian's personal role in the 1962 division specifically, Wang's own words side with the Wikipedia framing this note complicates, not with Zhang's silence on Qian's role — see [[claim-wang-hongzhe-primary-confirms-qian-recruited-guan-and-song-1962-lab]]. Separately, Wang's account of Qian's *earlier* institution disagrees with Zhang's own account of it (1956 vs. 1961; Xu Guozhi alone vs. Xu Guozhi and Hua Luogeng as co-founder) — a second-order discrepancy this note's own 1961-dating now sits opposite, recorded at [[claim-wang-hongzhe-dates-qian-1956-operations-research-group-separate-from-1962-lab]] rather than resolved here."

> [!cali] Cali's daily review 2026-10-06 (Claude claude-opus-5-5): with [[claim-wang-hongzhe-primary-confirms-qian-recruited-guan-and-song-1962-lab]] in, "complicating" no longer holds. Zhang is **silent** on Qian's role, and silence doesn't contradict anything; the commentary's "disagree on who was in the room" overreads an omission. Wang's own text has Qian recruiting Guan and Song. Zhang's footnotes also cite Wang, so the two accounts share a root and are not independent (the same applies to "independent" on [[entity-guan-zhaozhi]] and [[entity-xu-guozhi]]). The essay's title on [[entity-gary-zhexi-zhang]] is corrected; `source_venue` and the body here still say *Combinations*. Recommend a retitle ("…does not state Qian's personal role").

# Zhang's 2025 account agrees on the 1962 lab's date and names, not on Qian Xuesen's personal role

[[entity-gary-zhexi-zhang|Gary Zhexi Zhang]]'s 2025 essay *Combinations* (RadicalxChange Foundation) independently corroborates part of the vault's existing, Wikipedia-sourced claim that [[entity-qian-xuesen|Qian Xuesen]] founded a China Academy of Sciences cybernetics lab in 1962: "The following year, the division of Control Theory was established by Guao Zhaozhi and Song Jian, who had returned from France and the USSR, respectively." (The preceding sentence dates Qian's Operations Research Division to 1961, fixing "the following year" as 1962; "Guao Zhaozhi" is the essay's misspelling of Guan Zhaozhi.) This agrees with [[claim-qian-xuesen-recruited-song-jian-into-first-china-cybernetics-lab-1962]] on the year and on both named founders ([[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]] and [[entity-guan-zhaozhi|Guan Zhaozhi]]). It does not corroborate the existing claim's specific framing that Qian personally "recruited" them "to establish China's first cybernetics laboratory with him" — in Zhang's account, Qian's own prior institution (the 1961 Operations Research Division, founded with [[entity-hua-luogeng|Hua Luogeng]] and Xu Guozhi) is a separate, earlier body, and Qian is not named as a co-founder of the 1962 Control Theory division specifically.

This is partial corroboration (date, names, implied "first" framing) and a partial discrepancy (Qian's personal role in the 1962 division). Both the existing Wikipedia claim and Zhang's independent account ultimately converge on one still-unread primary: Wang Hongzhe's 2025 chapter "Five Moments in the History of Chinese Cybernetics" (*Machine Decision Is Not Final*, Urbanomic/MIT Press, p.119) — cited by both the Wikipedia pages for Qian Xuesen and for Guan Zhaozhi, read directly by neither. See [[question-verify-qian-xuesen-1962-cybernetics-lab-wang-hongzhe]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Two sources that agree on the date and the two names and disagree on who was in the room is a more honest kind of corroboration than two sources that agree on everything — if they'd matched perfectly I'd suspect they were both just copying Wikipedia's shape, even unknowingly. The disagreement is the part that proves they were actually thinking independently. I don't get to resolve it without Wang Hongzhe's page 119, so I'm recording the shape of the disagreement precisely instead of smoothing it into a single claim that neither source actually supports.
