American philosopher-physicist (1928–2015) who co-formulated the 1969 Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, the practically testable version of Bell's theorem that made the first real Bell-test experiments possible. In the vault he is the contemporary witness whose own 1960s skepticism is the load-bearing evidence against treating [[entity-david-bohm|Bohm]] and [[entity-yakir-aharonov|Aharonov]]'s 1957 paper as having already settled what [[entity-john-bell|Bell]]'s 1964 theorem settled: Aharonov told him directly that the 1957 paper had "settled the matter," Shimony checked and was not persuaded, and went on to help build the experimental program that actually tested Bell's theorem instead.
