Alexandre-René Pignier

Director of the Institution Royale des Jeunes Aveugles (the Royal Institution for Blind Youth, Paris) at the time Charles Barbier's raised-point writing system was introduced there. In retirement, after both Braille and Barbier had died, Pignier wrote a school history containing a biographical sketch of Braille that — per historian Philippa Campsie's direct account, working from the surviving correspondence — invents a fictional scene: a hostile 1821 exchange in which the young Braille publicly criticizes Barbier's system. The vault treats this as a distinct fabrication from the "soldier-code" origin legend, riding in the same received popular story but traceable to a different source and mechanism.
