Alfred Nobel
Swedish chemist, engineer, and armaments industrialist (1833–1896) who invented dynamite and, in his 1895 will, endowed the annual prizes in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace that bear his name. Matters to this vault as the origin point of its institutional-rules thread: the no-posthumous-award statute is a later gloss on a will that never addressed the question, administered since his death by the Nobel Foundation he created to carry the prizes forward.
