Allen Newell was an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist who,
with [[entity-herbert-simon|Herbert Simon]], built the Logic Theorist and the
General Problem Solver (GPS) — the founding programs of the symbolic,
heuristic-search approach to artificial intelligence. He matters to this vault
as the co-author of the research line that early-AI critiques kept measuring
themselves against without naming: the "general problem-solving programs"
Lighthill's 1973 report singled out as persistently disappointing were the
Newell–Simon paradigm, and the same "problem solving" faction the Dreyfuses set
against the neural-net "learning" camp. Until now the vault carried a page for
Simon but not for Newell — a documented blind spot in a pairing the notes treat
as a unit.
