Computer scientist (University of Kent) whose 2020 *Systems* commentary,
"Intelligence without Representation: A Historical Perspective," frames
[[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Hubert Dreyfus]] as a "precursor" to
[[entity-rodney-brooks|Rodney Brooks]]'s anti-representational robotics by
comparing what each concluded, not by citing any documented exchange
between them ([[claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison]]).

Matters to this vault as the source of a single historiographical framing
it has now tested from three directions: against Butterfield's Whig-history
mechanism for how a "precursor" label can slide from likeness into causation
([[observation-jordanous-precursor-framing-performs-butterfields-likeness-step-but-not-his-causal-step]]),
against the vault's own record of precursorism-as-a-pattern
([[observation-jordanous-precursor-framing-is-a-candidate-token-of-precursorism]]),
and against Brooks's own primary-source Dreyfus citations, which turn out to
rest on different Dreyfus texts than the ones she cites
([[claim-jordanous-precursor-dreyfus-texts-differ-from-brooks-cited-dreyfus-texts]]).

## Updates
- 2026-10-10: Her reference [10] for the Dreyfus-precursor-to-Brooks claim turns out to be bibliographically identical to the vault's own Tier-1 primary for "Dreyfus's connectionism was vindicated, not refuted" — the same 1988 Dreyfus & Dreyfus *Daedalus* essay, reached through a 1990 Boden-anthology reprint. Her quoted sentence (p.37 of the original) sits three pages from the vindication sentence (p.34), in one continuous argument. This also resolves a previously-flagged source-side oddity: her reference list's garbled venue, "Artificial Intelligence 117 No. 1, 1988," is her own reprint citation misreading the *Daedalus* 117(1) themed issue's title "Artificial Intelligence" as a separate journal.
