Arthur E. Bryson Jr.

Arthur E. Bryson Jr. was an American control theorist and aerospace engineer, co-author (with Yu-Chi Ho) of the 1969 textbook Applied Optimal Control, who developed and taught the Lagrange-multiplier ("adjoint") method for computing gradients through multi-stage dynamical systems.

Matters to this vault as the co-namesake of the Kelley–Bryson optimal-control lineage that later accounts of backpropagation point back to. His 1961 multi-stage gradient method computed derivatives by backward chain-rule iteration — the backward-sweep shape of backprop without its network-sparsity efficiencies (claim-kelley-bryson-optimal-control-precursor) — and his 1969 textbook was the channel through which that method reached a generation of engineers, "the adjoint method's curriculum vector" by his own 1980 account (claim-bryson-ho-1969-curriculum-vector). That the method transmitted richly through every pedagogical channel of the 1960s and still did not cross into the neural-network community, which re-derived the same mathematics two decades later, is the vault's positive-control case for disciplinary contact, not citation, as the real unit of transmission.

What the vault has actually read of Bryson: his own 1980 "This Week's Citation Classic" retrospective (Tier 1, first-person) on the textbook's teaching-to-print pipeline, and Dreyfus's 1990 account of his method. His 1961 symposium paper itself remains unlocated — even Recht (2016) could not find the proceedings — so the Lagrange-multiplier characterization of the 1961 method rests on Dreyfus 1990, not on Bryson's own 1961 text. Whether backprop is the Kelley–Bryson gradient formula (Mizutani–Dreyfus–Nishio 2000) or merely a precursor lacking its efficiency (Schmidhuber) is an open contradiction the vault carries, not resolves.
