Indian jurist, economist, and social reformer (1891-1956) who chaired the
drafting committee of India's constitution and led the 20th century's
foremost movement against caste-based discrimination, writing as a Dalit
himself.

Matters to this vault as its first entry into Indian constitutional and
caste history, arriving through an unexpected route: he studied under
John Dewey at Columbia University (1913-1916) and later built his own
definition of democracy — "not merely a form of Government... primarily a
mode of associated living" — directly on Dewey's teaching, making him the
second of two Dewey students, alongside Hu Shih, who each shaped a
different nation's 20th-century refounding.

- 2026-09-10: Dewey's own correspondence and works never mention Ambedkar
  at all, per Scott Stroud's direct search of the Dewey archive — but
  Stroud has separately determined Ambedkar sat in the same Dewey seminar
  (Philosophy 131-132, 1915-1916) as Hu Shih, the first documented point
  of contact between the two former students
