Emerging term, first met in this vault via Vinck & De Haro's (2026) philosophy-of-physics paper: a property physicists attribute to a theory or algebra (originating in 1980s string theory, popularized in the 1990s Witten–Rovelli/Smolin dispute) when its formalism does not presuppose a fixed spacetime background. At least four competing formal definitions now exist — Anderson's absolute objects, Pooley's variational principle, Belot's degrees-of-freedom proposal, and Vinck & De Haro's own representation-independence definition — none of which, per this paper, agrees with the others on whether a specific 2023–2025 algebraic construction in de Sitter quantum gravity qualifies. Watching for whether this term recurs in a future capture before promoting to a full hub. See [[claim-vinck-de-haro-2026-no-existing-definition-captures-wittens-background-independence-claim]] and [[claim-vinck-de-haro-2026-propose-background-independent-algebra-as-representation-independence]] for the sourced claims.
